It could happen.
Lingering in the air at Seattle Grace hospital is the feeling that something has gone unresolved. Sure, the doctors and patients go about their business as if nothing has changed, but there is a key element missing from years past that has still never been fully addressed.
And her name is Izzie Stevens.
You’ll recall that Katherine Heigl peaced out from the show last year to be a mom and movie star and if you are a fan of the show, you know that Izzie and Alex called it quits on her very last episode. But ever since then, Alex hasn’t been the same, still been pining over the wife that left him.
In short, the Izzie story needs to be wrapped up and quick, but there’s only one easy way to settle it — kill her off.
But will Shonda Rhimes go through with it? Not so much. She explains that she and her staff went through a lot of options, but when they did settle on killing her, it just didn’t feel right. She explains:
“It was ready to go, but then I went home and literally couldn’t sleep,” she recalls. “It just felt so mean. It wasn’t closure; it just felt brutal. Alex might have never recovered from it. And the audience who loved Izzie would’ve been devastated. So we didn’t do it.”
So, now what? We just let things stay in limbo?
That’s completely up to Heigl!
“I’m open to seeing Izzie again,” Shonda says. “So if [Katherine] were to come back, we would be thrilled to [wrap up her story]. But if she doesn’t, we’ll just move on.”
We’re betting on the latter. We all know how Katherine feels about returning, even though it would be nice to give Izzie some closure.
