Say whaaa???
Lawyers for Gucci scored a small victory in court on Wednesday while grilling GUESS CEO Paul Marciano.
When asked about his role in plotting a “massive scheme” with the company’s footwear licensee Marc Fisher Footwear to knock off Gucci’s design motifs, Marciano admitted to being “inspired” by the Italian fashion house’s designs.
Referring to a GUESS bag with a diamond-logoed ‘G’ pattern, Marciano explained:
“This kind of pattern is common in the world of fashion and it├óΓé¼Γäós not particular to Gucci. What I understand here, which is very frequent [in fashion], is an inspiration to create an original bag of G├óΓé¼Γäós with the same components. That├óΓé¼Γäós what design is.”
Gucci’s lawyer Louis Ederer also brought up the cease and desist letters Coach fired off the GUESS in 2004 for copying their C logo, but Marciano simply said they were influenced by “trends of the time”.
Suuuure.
GUESS’ CEO ended the day of intense questioning by delivering his own zinger, telling Ederer:
“I think the lawsuit is wrong. I truly believe that if this is something Gucci was genuinely concerned with, they would have acted within days, everywhere. Are you telling me today that suddenly you realize what├óΓé¼Γäós happened in 1995?”
See, we knew this courtroom battle was going to be good!
