Hayden Panettiere is opening up about her traumatic childbirth, postpartum depression, and complicated relationship with her mom.
As we’ve been following, the actress is gearing up to release her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, on Tuesday. So far, we’ve heard a lot about her life growing up in the spotlight and some pretty disturbing stories about real life Hollywood. Unfortunately, her hard experiences bled over into her personal and family life, as well, and she’s finally getting her truth out in the open!

In a new interview with Gayle King on Monday’s CBS Mornings, the Nashville star opened up about her experience with pregnancy:
“I had a wonderful pregnancy. I worked throughout my whole pregnancy.”
Sadly, though, when it came time for her to give birth to her daughter, Kaya, things turned dangerous:
“I had a really rough birth to the point where I almost didn’t make it through.”
So scary!
This was only the beginning of her problems, though. Hayden looked visibly emotional while recalling her postpartum depression:
“There I am with this beautiful, healthy, beautiful baby girl and this very fortunate life … and I could not for the life of me be happy. I was so depressed. I just couldn’t find my way out.”
She said she “desperately” wanted to be happy, but things only got harder because she wasn’t the mother she “thought” she would be, nor the mother she wanted to be:
“I had all these ideas in my head of what I wanted to do as a mom.”
This is where her trauma with her own mother, Lesley Vogel, reared its head. Hayden explained how her own tumultuous childhood shaped her motherhood:
“I think I was also, at the same time, scared because of what my mom did to me that I might do that to my child.”
Just heartbreaking. Especially with how things have been going lately with her mom. Our heart goes out to her.
Where the Remember The Titans actress is now is a lot better, thankfully, even after giving up full custody. She said of her daughter:
“I’m so blessed to have a great relationship with her. I fly over there as much as I can. I’m on FaceTime with her all the time. She’s now 11 years old, and she’s calling Mommy more and more.”
Aww… So sweet. We’re so glad to hear it. You can watch for yourself at the 5:56 mark (below):
