It’s hard to believe that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt first met nearly 20 years ago — and that they are still together now. Such a long road!
But that’s exactly the situation for The Hills alums. After first meeting at a nightclub in El Lay in 2006, the couple rocketed to reality TV fame on that infamous MTV show, and in the process came to be collectively known as “Speidi.”
They’ve certainly been through a lot of tough times, too — like most recently when they lost their Pacific Palisades home in the devastating wildfires that rocked Los Angeles at the very start of the year. But through it all, they have stuck by each others’ sides. And now we know why!

On Monday, People spoke to the mom of two sons (Gunner, 7, and Ryker, 2) about her decades-long connection to Spencer. According to her, the couple’s relationship has been so successful and lasted so long because the duo “always” prioritizes each other and their family over everything else!
The 38-year-old summed it up very simply:
“We put each other first.”
That’s the secret! That’s the whole thing! THAT is why they have been together for so long, and made it through thick and thin, and lived in love to see the other side of things!
To be fair, Speidi is not a normal couple. Their fame, the very way they got famous, the way they’ve spent their entire adult lives in the spotlight… it’s a unique situation to say the very least! But Heidi attempted to account for that, too, by explaining:
“Spencer and I have a really unique relationship where we’re usually with each other throughout the day. Some couples, or most, I would say, probably go to work in separate jobs and our work has always been really intertwined, which keeps us so on the same page and usually dealing with the same things.”
Their longevity also comes down to working well together. Not all couples have that! And even for those that do, it’s not always easy to find the right fit! Heidi acknowledged:
“Some couples don’t work well together. I have friends that are like, ‘wow, you guys work so well together.’ So for us, that’s always been part of it. We’re just in every part of each other’s worlds.”
She went on to swoon over her man by calling the crystal aficionado her “biggest cheerleader” throughout their time together:
“Spencer’s always been that way from the beginning of our relationship. But I’m so glad that people can finally appreciate that in him. He always has been my biggest cheerleader.”
Awww!
And then, Heidi concluded her thoughts with some simple but critical advice for other couples trying to emulate the longevity that she has enjoyed with Spencer:
“Laughing whenever you can and trying to keep positivity in there, but also being realistic with what you’re facing and having to deal with, and appreciating each other for what you do.”
That’s some of the best relationship advice we’ve heard in a while, to be honest! We’d all be wise to follow it. Hey, if we do take her advice, maybe we’ll land a forever love in a similar situation to Speidi.
