Megan Sugg, a high school senior, graduated about a month early from Glen Burnie High School in Maryland.
It was a bittersweet occasion because the whole event went down with the normal pomp and circumstance, like robes and flowers and speeches, but the big difference was the whole ceremony took place at the bedside of Megan’s dying mother, Darlene Sugg.
Darlene had been battling cancer for four years and was in hospice, living out her last moments with her family after her condition went downhill.
Things got so bad they were worried Darlene would never see Megan graduate, so they had the ceremony at her bedside.
Faculty members were there in full robes, the principal read a speech, written specifically about Megan and her mom, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Our eyes are feeling pretty moist at the moment, too.
Steve Sugg, Darlene’s husband, said:
“My wife was glowing to see Megan graduate.”
Megan, was also so exited to be able to graduate in front of her mom, saying:
“I was glad mom got to see me graduate, but I was sad to know that was the last moment I’m going to have with her.”
The day after the bedside graduation, Megan’s mom got to see her put on her gown and head off to her senior dance.
She died the next afternoon. She spent the last night holding her husband’s hand.
We feel awful she’s gone now but we’re so glad she got to experience those milestones with her daughter!!
