Hulu has taken advantage of society’s sick obsession with pitting streaming services against each other by releasing a Fyre Festival documentary mere days before Netflix’s already scheduled doc is due to begin streaming!
Like its competitor’s upcoming film, Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, Hulu’s Fyre Fraud tells the tragic story of the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival scam that left hundreds of influencers and rich kids stranded on an island without food, shelter, or entertainment.
But only Hulu’s film features an interview with Billy McFarland, the felonious entrepreneur who puppeteered the music-festival-turned-literal-dumpster-fire.

Hulu dropped their Fyre doc without the slightest warning on Monday — which turned out to be quite the McFarland-approved promotional tactic, as entertainment junkies couldn’t help but tweet about the sheer pettiness of the unexpected release:

Not just days before, but dropping it at the same time as the review embargo for the Netflix doc lifted. People are searching for info on the Fyre doc and SURPRISE! There's already one online.

While some streamers spun into crisis over the sudden choice between two rival documentaries, plenty of consumers vowed to watch both films because, as they pointed out, there is no limit to watching rich kids getting scammed:
i will happily watch both and indeed i would even watch a third one if it existed

We’ll see which Fyre Festival documentary reigns superior down the line, but NPR host Linda Holmes, who has apparently already seen both, tweeted that each film has something to offer:
The Fyre Festival documentaries now on Hulu and coming to Netflix are … both good.

And I think ultimately, the Hulu one treats it as a little more of a scam from the start, and the Netflix one a little more like it was a way overambitious hustle run by a guy who couldn't see reality. But those differences are minor.

In the words of co-conspirator Ja Rule: “Sorry to everyone who was inconvenienced by this…”
