So tragic.
Indianapolis 500 race car driver and two-time champ Dan Wheldon died on Sunday after his car crashed during a huge 15-car accident at the Las Vegas Indy 300.
His car went airborne after hitting the fence during Lap 12 of the race. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died.
The race was soon canceled, however racers did a five-lap turn as a salute to their fallen driver.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard released a statement about the incident:

“IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today.”

Australian driver Ryan Briscoe described the scene:

“I’ve never seen anything like it. The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere … your first thoughts are hoping that no one is hurt, because there├óΓé¼Γäós just stuff everywhere. Crazy.”

Wheldon was 33.
So sad. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
