We’re learning new details about the arrest of former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler… and they are certainly jaw-dropping.
As we reported early Friday morning, Kristin Cavallari‘s ex-husband was arrested by police in Franklin, Tennessee on Thursday evening following an alleged DUI. He was booked into jail, he snapped an awful-looking mugshot, and then he was released a few hours later on a $5,000 bond. But not before he was officially charged with driving under the influence, illegally possessing a weapon while intoxicated, implied consent, and failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision. Woof, that’s a lot.

Now, we know more about why the other charges (aside from just the DUI, which would be bad enough). According to People, which first viewed the charging documents late on Friday morning, the 41-year-old allegedly rear-ended another vehicle in downtown Franklin on Thursday night. At first, cops say, Cutler tried to flee the scene of the wreck. Then he apparently thought better of turning the crash into a hit-and-run, because the police affidavit claims Cutler tried a new approach. He offered to pay $2,000 to the driver of the other vehicle if they didn’t call the cops!
WHAT?!
But cops showed up anyway, as they do when there’s a crash — or maybe the other driver turned down the bribe? The responding officer noticed the former Vanderbilt University football star had “bloodshot eyes.” Not only that, but Cutler allegedly also reeked of alcohol, with the cop writing that Jay “had an overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person.” Uh-oh!! The officer’s arrest affidavit went on to state in part:
“I noticed Mr. Cutler staggering, swaying, and heavy-footed while walking. … I also noticed that he spoke thick-tongued, slurred, and mumbled. Mr. Cutler’s eyes were bloodshot, glassy, red/pink, watery, and dilated.”
The arresting officer then searched Cutler’s vehicle. During that search, he found a rifle in the backseat and a loaded Glock handgun in the center console! We knew the ex-gridiron great was arrested on a gun possession charge, but he had two guns in the car with him?! Jeez!!
At first, Cutler denied he had been drinking any alcohol prior to the crash. The officer didn’t buy it, though, as he wrote:
“I then informed Mr. Cutler that I am an Advanced Roadside Impairment Enforcement Officer and knew he was lying to me. I then asked him again how much alcohol he had consumed and Mr. Cutler stated he had a little bit.”
Uh-huh…
The officer gave Cutler the chance to take a field sobriety test, and he refused — so he was arrested on the spot. The football vet tried to deny being in an accident at all, but “there was a small dent in the rear of the other vehicle,” as the officer stated in the report. Womp, womp!
Once in custody, a judge issued a search warrant for a blood draw upon Cutler to test for blood-alcohol content. Per the affidavit, that warrant was carried out by nurses at the nearby Williamson Medical Center before Cutler was processed into jail. Sounds like there’s a lot of evidence against him…
Jay’s next court appearance on this matter has already been set for January 16, 2025. Reactions, y’all?? Share ’em (below)…
