We don’t really know what to make of this. But it sure is awkward!
John Galliano helped out backstage during Oscar de la Renta‘s A/W 2013 presentation in New York on Tuesday, but it was a pic of him on his way to the show that has tongues wagging.
The designer was snapped wearing a rather inneresting outfit consisting of a black bowler hat, pin-striped crop pants, and long black coat while also sporting a curly hairdo that many Jewish community leaders find to be in mockery of traditional Hasidic clothing.
Williamsburg community leader Isaac Abraham said:
“He├óΓé¼Γäós trying to embarrass people in the Jewish community and make money on clothes [while] dressed like people he has insulted.”
His sentiments were echoed by Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who remarked:
“Who is he mocking? The way the socks look, the jacket, the peyos…My question is, who├óΓé¼Γäós he laughing at?”
On one hand, the ringlets over his ears are reminiscent of “peyos,” the curled sidelocks traditionally worn by some Hasidic men and boys in the Orthodox Jewish community.
However, John’s ringlets go around his entire head instead of just appearing on the sides.
AND he’s worn this hairstyle before!
On top of that, his outfit consists of designer pieces, including a Steven Jones hat and Yohji Yamamoto trousers, so it’s not like he purposefully sought out Hasidic-looking clothing at a costume shop or anything.
Responding to the comments, John’s rep Liz Rosenberg said:
├óΓé¼┼ôYour accusations are not at all correct.”
We don’t think John would be dumb enough to do something like this considering how hard he has tried to atone for his anti-Semitic comments from 2011.
But was this a bad outfit choice? Yes.
Was it done to mock Jews? Um, probably not.
