We had a feeling that Johnny Weir wouldn’t be competing in the Sochi Olympics, despite some hints as to a possible bid — but we thought if he DIDN’T go, it would be more because of Russia’s archaic and offensive anti-gay laws!
Instead, the two-time Olympian did not register for the qualifiers for the national championships, as the deadline to register was Sept. 1.
Johnny hasn’t competed since withdrawing from Rostelecom Cup last year, and we all know he finished sixth at the Vancouver Olympics. We bring this up because only those who placed in the top five at last year’s nationals or who won medals at the most recent Olympics or world championships are eligible to skip the qualifiers to go to the next games… which means that Johnny is officially not on the team.
Also, Johnny turned 29 in July, which is considered old (OLD??) by recent standards!
Just because he’s not competing in the games, doesn’t mean he won’t be there! He’s been super outspoken and critical of Russia’s new anti-gay laws, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he was set to join a broadcasting team to cover the games! He’s been great on camera before, and would be the PERFECT addition!
Still, we’re bummed we won’t get to see him skate!
