Kate Spade's Father Sheds Light On The Designer's Mental Illness: 'She'd Been Taking Some Pills, Which I Advised Her Not To Take'

What a heartbreaking time for the entire Spade/Brosnahan family.
As we reported, Kate Spade died this week after taking her own life in her New York City apartment. On Wednesday, her father Frank Brosnahan spoke with the Kansas City Star to shed light on the designer’s battle with mental illness.
The nearly 90-year-old told the outlet:

“She’d been taking some pills, which I advised her not to take.”

Frank went on to say that he last spoke with his daughter on Monday night and everything seemed normal at that time:

“Well, I don’t know what happened. The last I talked with her, the night before last, she was happy planning a trip to California to look at colleges. She doted on her daughter.”

As you know, Kate left behind her 13-year-old daughter with Andy Spade, Frances Beatrix.
Frank also mentioned that he is hoping his daughter’ body will be laid to rest alongside his late wife’s back home in Kansas City:

“At least that’s what I would like. I’d like for her to be buried with her mother. They were very close.”

As for what comes of Kate’s unfortunate passing, Frank is hoping it at least starts a conversation about mental health:

“One thing we feel is that any talk that they do that helps somebody else, Katy would have liked that. She was always giving and charitable. If that helped anybody avoid anything ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ fine, she’d be delighted.”

When asked about the rest of his family, Frank said:

“I think they’re all right. We’re a large family and all close. We’ll get through it. But we certainly miss our bright, sun-shiney little person.”

Ugh. Our hearts just hurt for him. Sending all our love.
