It sure is!
This morning, America took a collective sigh as Regis Philbin announced he was retiring from his long-time ABC morning show. Today, its called Live! With Regis & Kelly, but back in the day, Reg bantered with Kathie Lee Gifford. There’s probably no one who better understands Regis’ decision to leave the show more than her (she left in 2000), so she’s the best person to get insight from on how Reg might be feeling.
When interview, she first revealed that she wasn’t too surprised by the news, since he had “hinted” at it during one of their ritual dinners together. He explains:

“We try to have dinner like every six weeks or something and the last couple of times that we had dinner he was talking very openly with me about it. He said, ‘I think it’s going to be at the end of this contract year,’ which would be September 2011, so that’s exactly what it’s going to be.”

As for what the soon-to-be 80-years-young TV vet is going to do with himself in his retirement, Kathie Lee sees big things for him. She explained:

├óΓé¼┼ôHe├óΓé¼Γäós going to have a landmark birthday in August, It├óΓé¼Γäós a new beginning for him├óΓé¼┬ª I don├óΓé¼Γäót think Reg will ever retire. He loves what he does so much. But he can work in a lot of different ways and he can do it on his own schedule. You get tired of the sameness of something and as we age, you get tired of having to be on someone else├óΓé¼Γäós schedule all the time, And even though he lives across the street from the studio, sometimes I know winters get to him I think he would rather be in sunny Florida or California and I├óΓé¼Γäóve got a feeling he├óΓé¼Γäós got some stuff up his sleeve…There├óΓé¼Γäós a million things Reg can do, there are going to be tons and tons of offers for him.”

That true, but first we hope he really thinks about taking himself down to Florida for a well deserved vacation. A loooong vacation. We’re thinking maybe like a year. Give retirement a real shot before plowing right back into the biz.
