We have a LOT to discuss after this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show!
The messaging was heavy during Kendrick Lamar’s historic Halftime performance, which started off with Uncle Sam, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, introducing the “great American game” — but was he really talking about football? Kendrick then comes on screen rapping GNX, assuring viewers that “the revolution will not be televised.” If you’re not familiar with the saying, it harkens back to Gil Scott-Heron’s 1970 Civil Rights era poem of the same name, which offers an analysis of the relationship between mainstream media brought to you by corporations, and real change led by individuals. Seemingly in reference to our current political climate, Kendricks adds:
“You picked the right time but the wrong guy.”
Oooooh, that goes SO hard. Especially with Donald Trump literally in attendance! Kendrick ain’t the one to play the government’s game!

The rapper’s set then transitions into his song Squabble Up, before American caricature Uncle Sam returns to criticize the performance:
“No, no, no, too loud, too reckless, too ghetto. Mr. Lamar, do you really know how to play the game? Then tighten up!”
The set then goes into Kendrick’s Humble, which includes lyrics like, “Sit down / Be humble” — in this context, a glaring commentary on how our government wants the American people to fall in line.
Wow. The artistry is unmatched!
Kendrick then goes on to perform a mashup of DNA, Euphoria, and Man at the Garden — the opposite of sitting down and being humble. And Uncle Sam returns to scold:
“You brought your homeboys with you? The old culture cheat code. Scorekeeper, deduct one life.”
Chilling.
Kendrick then raps Peekaboo, before teasing THAT song… Not Like Us! You know, the one where he calls Drake a “pedophile”? The one Drake is actively suing him over?? Kendrick says:
“I want to perform they favorite song but you know they love to sue.”
HA!
He then welcomes SZA for a duet of their songs Luther and All the Stars — two chart-topping classics, one of which even associated with Marvel film Black Panther — the type of family-friendly affair Uncle Sam approves of:
“Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s what America wants! Nice, calm. You’re almost there. Don’t mess this up.”
Not Like Us then comes on in full swing as Kendrick speaks into the mic:
“It’s a cultural divide I’mma get it on the floor, 40 acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music.”
If you’re not familiar with THAT term, it’s a highly loaded one… It stems from a governmental promise made to enslaved African Americans after the Civil War for land and resources. This performance is SO expertly constructed for today’s political climate!
Kendrick continues, “They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence,” before going IN on Not Like Us — during which he directly calls out Drake while smiling into the camera. WOW! Serena Williams even appears doing the Crip Walk (in response to the criticism she received at Wimbledon)! She also happens to be someone Drizzy chased after for YEARS. Diabolical, K. Dot!!
The iconic rapper then concludes his performance with his song TV OFF. There’s so much more — including the gamer remote stage, the divided American flag, dead bodies. The imagery! Watch the full performance (below):
What a show. What are your reactions, Perezcious readers??
