For a while there we were thinking Kanye West was going full red pill.
Then he did what we all wish our racist uncles would do and suddenly saw the error of his ways!
No, it wasn’t divine intervention — but it was close!
At Variety and Rolling Stone‘s Criminal Justice Reform Summit, Kim Kardashian West explained it was Donald Trump‘s “personality” which appealed to her husband — and he never even knew anything about the bigot’s horrible policies!

It started when interviewer Van Jones mentioned Kim and Ye have different politics, something she had to clarify was actually a misconception:
“I feel like he’s very misunderstood and the worst communicator. But when we talk about it, we have very similar politics.
He’s very not political, actually, he just happens to like Donald Trump’s personality, but doesn’t know about the politics. So, I’ve educated him recently. I think it gets really misconstrued. He will always say he was friendly with him before, and he’s the same person and friendly with him now. I could also co-exist with someone and still have different political views. My mom and my step-dad did that. It’s fine to be different and have your own view.”
Well, it is and it isn’t.
Sure, it’s fine to believe in supply-side economics (despite no evidence of tax cuts for the rich ever trickling down to anyone). It’s fine to think a smaller central government isn’t as effective and to have different moral stance on tough issues like the death penalty.
These are NORMAL right vs left issues.
It is not fine to espouse racist views, declare war on the free press, and promote authoritarianism.
The way Kim tells it, Kanye was not passionate about any of the issues which bother people about Trump.
In fact, he was mostly passionate about people telling him to STOP supporting Trump. He didn’t like that one bit:
“What he fights for is the right to like what he wants to like. Even if it’s different from what you like. He never said, ‘Okay, I know what’s going on with immigration, and I know this and I know that.’ If he really knew, he would feel very compassionate about it. He never said that he supports that. I know it’s very confusing because when you see someone wearing a red hat you would think that they are supporting that. But he’s just fighting for free thought and freedom to like a person even if it’s not the popular decision.”
We’re all for defending unpopular taste. But Trump isn’t anchovy and pineapple pizza. He’s poison. You can’t defend liking the taste of poison.

Kim also explained why she spoke to Kanye about these things behind closed doors, despite the outcry against her on social media.
She said:
“After he went to the White House or has been outspoken, I could have easily been on social media and corrected him. But I believe people have their own journeys. I know his heart, so I know that one day what he’s been trying to say will come out. It’s taken a little long so I’m jumping in and helping out, but I know his heart so I never really stress too much.”
Well, her approach certainly seems to have worked.
In fact, he’s now trying to steer his beloved Trump to be better. Like after the President’s horrific tweet blaming California for the fires (despite them being on federally managed land) and threatening the state’s funding — all while people and animals were dying:
There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!

She told Variety Kanye actually responded privately to that:
“When he doesn’t agree with something like that fire comment he will screengrab [and] he will send it to the people close to [Trump] and say that maybe there should be a little more empathy in this.”
Wow. Something tells us POTUS isn’t listening to too many advisers these days.
But he did tweet shortly after:
More than 4,000 are fighting the Camp and Woolsey Fires in California that have burned over 170,000 acres. Our hearts are with those fighting the fires, the 52,000 who have evacuated, and the families of the 11 who have died. The destruction is catastrophic. God Bless them all.

Considering the fires actually drove Kimye from their home, maybe their message carried more weight. (Or someone else took his phone again.)
Speaking of which, Kim says the family still has not returned to their home despite being given the all-clear:
“It’s smoky and my son has a little bit of asthma so it’s not really safe for him to go back.”
Awwww.
At least everyone in the fam is OK. And that’s what’s really important.
