Lil Nas X Says He 'Never Would Have' Come Out, But 'The Universe' Pushed Him To Do It...

Lil Nas X coming out gay

Lil Nas X is taking over the world!

Old Town Road has been a mega-hit all summer long, becoming the longest-running No. 1 song in history after landing on top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 19 weeks and counting, but it’s the singer’s personal life — and very public coming out as gay — that’s drawing him attention now, too!

The 20-year-old singer recently sat down with Time to discuss his seemingly-overnight success thanks to Old Town Road and its many remixes, including those with Billy Ray Cyrus, the yodel kid Mason Ramsey, and others.

During the interview, though, the performer opened up a bit about what it was like to come out in such a public way — and so casually — just as his hit single was really taking off. Explaining he’d been taught from a young age how “homosexuality is never going to be OK,” Lil Nas revealed how Pride Week was a catalyst to his decision to go public with his sexuality.

In fact, as he says (below), he wouldn’t have revealed his orientation had it not felt like “the universe” was pushing him to come clean as Pride swelled around him:

“I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe. In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands — little stuff like that.”

Interesting!

And though there was some backlash around his revelation for a little while after, it’s clear the young superstar didn’t take too much of the negativity to heart. Hell, to hear him tell the story, it sure sounds like the rapper was meant to do it like this, haters be damned (below):

“Everything lined up for this moment to take me to this place. Not to sound self-centered, but it feels like I’m chosen, in a way, to do this stuff.”

We can understand! It does sound a little self-centered (ha!), but the rapper has become such a part of internet culture, as well as such a part of the music industry, it almost feels like the planets aligned, and fate intervened! Sometimes things just have a way of working out, we suppose!

BTW, here’s the Time magazine cover to go along with the singer’s interview (below):
