Melania Trump has been booed before, but it was always when standing beside her husband. She could have assumed none of the vitriol was coming her way.
But we can’t say we’re all that surprised she’s getting the old Bronx cheer even solo now. After all, you stand next to the most reviled man in the world, some of that orangeness is going to rub off on you.
That seems to be what happened on Tuesday when the First Lady made a special appearance at the Baltimore Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness at the University of Maryland.

From the moment she was introduced the jeering started. There was applause as well, but it was definitely outblasted by the boos.
According to CNN reporter Kate Bennett, who was there in the audience, the heckling lasted a solid minute, but the crowd never really quieted down to take in Melania’s words with rapt attention.
Nevertheless, she plagiarized — sorry, she persisted — saying:
“Thank you to all of the students who are here. I am so proud of you for the bravery it takes to share that you have been strongly affected by the opioid epidemic in some way.”
Speaking on the opioid crisis, she said:
“Promoting education and awareness on these issues will always be one of my top priorities. I am in this fight with you and I am fighting for you. I encourage you, if you are struggling with addiction right now, reach out for support — whether it’s a teacher, parent, friend, grandparent, coach or pastor, talk to an adult in your life that you trust. It is never too late to ask for help.”
When she finished she was booed again, right off the stage.

In response to the booing, the First Lady released a statement to CNN, saying:
“We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact is we have a serious crisis in our country and I remain committed to educating children on the dangers and deadly consequences of drug abuse.”
Oh, you mean the children who have to watch you and your husband completely ignore the science on their planet being destroyed? Who have to hear about their president actively fighting against any efforts to stop the destructive effects of climate change in favor of profit? Those children?
Considering this was a youth summit, we have to assume this was mostly young people showing their disapproval.
Perhaps it was the fact these were kids in Baltimore, one of the places “great uniter” Donald Trump has decided to vilify in his racist rhetoric. In an infamous July tweet, the President called the city a “rat and rodent infested mess.” He was specifically targeting late Representative Elijah Cummings‘ district, Maryland’s 7th — which just so happens to be 59% black, encompassing all the majority African American neighborhoods in Baltimore County — a place “no human being would want to live.”
So classy.
So yes, maybe the children of Baltimore were just showing their distaste for a First Family who would denigrate them so disgustingly on the world’s stage.
Or maybe they were specifically booing Melania?
Maybe they were upset with the First Lady’s obdurate hypocrisy in running her ridiculously named “Be Best” anti-bullying campaign. After all, the world’s biggest bully right now, right down to the schoolyard nicknames, is the man who sleeps… well, let’s be honest, probably down the hall from her.
