The 52-year-old stopped by the Hollywood Raw Podcast and revealed with Dax Holt and Adam Glyn about how hurt she felt because of the Amazon Prime series:

“I have to be 100% honest, I’ve never watched the show, and there’s a particular reason… I know it’s based on my mom and Phyllis Diller, a lot of these different women. It was still so soon after my mom’s death and so raw to me. I would have loved more than anything an email just saying ‘hey, your mom was one of the inspirations for this, we hope you love watching the show as much as we enjoy making it’. I have never heard a single word from anyone, EVER, involved in the show.”

As you’ll recall, the sharp-tongued Miz Rivers passed away in 2014 at the age of 81. Before she was critiquing red carpet looks on Fashion Police for E! and starring in a reality series with her daughter, she worked in the stand up comedy scene, and was inspired by the likes of Diller and Lenny Bruce.

Melissa continued:

“I guess hurtful is the word, that they never even just said [anything]”

However, there is one cast member she does not have issues with, and actually congratulated:

“I sent flowers to Jane Lynch after she won her Emmy win for it last year… because she actually acknowledged my mom. I sent her flowers saying ‘Thank you.'”

Rachel Brosnahan, who portrays the lead character in the series, has previously spoken about Joan’s influence on Midge Maisel though. The actress told Metro UK in 2017:

“I always liked Joan Rivers but I had no idea just how extraordinary she was and how much of a trailblazer she was at that time until I really dove into this research. She was fascinating, so I’m newly devastated that she’s no longer with us, she was an incredible woman. She’s so complicated.”

Brosnahan added:

“Early on, Joan Rivers was out there talking about stuff that was so taboo, what it meant to be a woman and things like abortion and this double standard that existed between men and women. That’s certainly something you’ll see Midge do as well. The main difference between them is Joan Rivers is somebody who felt like she never belonged, and that’s where her comedy came from. She felt like an ugly duckling, she didn’t fit in, and for Midge it’s the opposite.”
