If anybody can sway your vote this political season, let it be the amazing Meryl Streep!
The actress spoke to Variety on Monday, and while much of it was about her upcoming film Florence Foster Jenkins (which looks fascinating, BTW), the conversation shifted into politics… and former costar Clint Eastwood!

Of course, Streep and Eastwood were romantic leads in the classic film adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County.
When a reporter mentioned that Miz Streep’s former compatriot is firmly in the tank for Donald Trump this fall, it caught the actress completely off guard:
“I didn’t know that. I’ll have to speak to him. I’ll have to correct that! I’m shocked. I really am. Because he’s more ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ I would have thought he would be more sensitive than that.”
Streep has played Trump on stage before, so she may know a thing or two about him!
Eastwood has recently come out and said some pretty ridiculous things about The Donald’s racism, so it’s surprising Streep hasn’t taken notice.
(LOLz! We love that she called her former onscreen lover “sensitive”!)
Nevertheless she was completely shocked to learn of his support, even knowing his political leanings.

However, she did offer up a morsel of wisdom, Eastwood or not, about why people at Trump’s rallies get so intense in the moment:
“When you get a lot of people in a group, it can go good or it can go bad in a way that [overrides] each individual person. The aggregate of everybody’s emotion, it’s such a powerful thing. You can see it in the Trump rallies, where people I just know, in their living rooms, would be better people, are driven to the worst possibilities by the bloodlust in a crowd. It just gets ginned up and they’re outside of themselves. They’re behaving as a larger unit, not just themselves.”

Streep also spoke about her energetic, inspiring speech at the Democratic National Convention late last month, revealing that it was a watershed moment even for her:
“All of a sudden I wasn’t thinking about me, me, me, my speech. The whole moment just overtook me. I thought about my grandmother, who wasn’t allowed to vote ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ had three kids and wasn’t deemed capable. I mean, the smartest person I know. The whole thing was overwhelming. And when I went out I just felt what I felt. I did my Howard Dean scream!”
And fortunately, encouragingly, at the end of the day, the actress believes that American doesn’t really need Clint Eastwood or those like him!

Hillary Clinton will rise to the top and the practical need for a competent leader will emerge in November.
Streep said:
“If you’re an actor and all you do, all you’re interested in, are people and their contradictions and their possibilities, good and bad, you can feel what they say about appealing to the angels of our better nature. I think there is a reckoning. People will go ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ or their wives will go ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ ├óΓé¼╦£You know what? This is crazy. It’s too tricky. We’re not going to gamble with our children’s future.'”
Amen, sister!!
Now let’s just go and let her set Eastwood straight in a way that only Meryl Streep can! Ha!!!
