It’s comments like this that reminds us why the world of sports desperately needs more athletes like Michael Sam and Jason Collins!
Professional golfer Steve Elkington was apparently not too thrilled with all of the coverage the trailblazing footballer was getting on TV and took to Twitter to express his frustration!
However, after taking shots at ESPN, he chose to make a nasty joke about Michael himself, saying:
“ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine…. No one else expected to throw today”
Wow! Because apparently all gay me walk around carrying handbags?? We must’ve missed that memo!
Steve deleted the tweet and somewhat backtracked on his remarks, saying the blame falls on ESPN for covering Michael as a “gay athlete” when they should just be covering him as an athlete.
This would all be fine, however, Steve was the one who chose to define Michael by his homosexuality by making an offensive joke about gay stereotypes!
Maybe it’s time to take a break from Twitter, buddy!
