It doesn’t seem like it would be a secret, but until today, Michael Urie of Ugly Betty fame has never officially announced his sexual orientation. Of course, people have made their assumptions based on his acting roles and of the such, but now we have a definitive answer from Michael himself.
In an interview for The Advocate, Michael explains that he would rather not put a label on himself as “gay,” but he is currently dating a man. (A very sexy actor man named Ryan Spahn!) Michael reveals:
├óΓé¼┼ôI├óΓé¼Γäóve never been in. I├óΓé¼Γäóve never said I was straight, and I├óΓé¼Γäóm not saying I├óΓé¼Γäóm gay now. I never lie, and I├óΓé¼Γäóve never shied away from the topic. I├óΓé¼Γäóve certainly chosen through my work to do things that promote the rights of LGBTQ people. I am not a hypocrite├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥certainly not now…I├óΓé¼Γäóve been in a relationship for a while now, and if you just met the two of us together we├óΓé¼Γäód be ├óΓé¼╦£gay.’ But that somehow means anything that happened before [we met] didn├óΓé¼Γäót count├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and I don├óΓé¼Γäót feel that way. I know that some people feel that way. They were with women, but it always felt wrong. But it didn├óΓé¼Γäót for me. It felt right at the time. It didn├óΓé¼Γäót work out, but it also didn├óΓé¼Γäót work out with other men├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥many times. That├óΓé¼Γäós why ├óΓé¼╦£gay├óΓé¼Γäó never seemed right.├óΓé¼┬¥
So, when asked which letter in LGBTQ he identifies with most, Michael selected “Q” – queer.
And there you have it. Not so much a mystery solved.
