Michelle Obama Announces New School Lunch Guidelines

Yummy!
Yesterday Michelle Obama landed a solid backhand on the face of our nation’s child obesity epidemic.
The First Lady and the Agriculture Secretary announced the new guidelines during a visit with elementary students.
After the announcement, Mobama ate a healthy lunch with students, consisting of turkey tacos with brown rice, black bean and corn salad and fruit — an example of cafeteria meals to come.
The new school lunch rules are:
– Meals will have calorie caps for the first time and most trans fats will be banned.
– Sodium will gradually decrease over a 10 year period.
– Milk will have to be low in fat and flavored milks will have to be nonfat.
– Students qualifying for subsidized meals must have a certain number of vegetables and other nutritious foods on their lunch trays.
– Pizza won’t disappear from lunch lines, but will be made with healthier ingredients.
Here are the things Mrs. Obama wanted to improve, but Congress vetoed:
– Limit potatoes to two servings a week.
– NOT allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now.
– A serious limit on french fries and pizzas.
That potato limit would have been nice, but ya can’t will them all.
We think this is a GREAT first step!
