Michelle Trachtenberg‘s death at just 39 years old has been a heartbreaker this year. And it’s been made even worse not knowing what took her from us at such a young age. We’ve heard from sources saying she was battling illness… but now we know exactly what that was.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed to People on Wednesday that the manner of death was natural causes — and the official cause of death was “complications of diabetes mellitus.”

Diabetes mellitus is just the full scientific name for diabetes. We don’t know which type of diabetes Michelle suffered from. We did learn she recently underwent a liver transplant — that is often because of fatty liver disease, a possible complication of diabetes. But we don’t know all these details for sure.
She told friends “she was struggling” and “dealing with health issues” in recent months, per sources. It’s likely everything was related. But she died in her home, and not in a hospital… so it must have been sudden in the end. Sadly, she was alone in her apartment. Her mother is the one who found her.
Such a tragic end to an immense talent…
