Michelle Williams does not often publicly reminisce on her time with the late, great Heath Ledger. So it’s always so special when she does.
While on Sunday’s Armchair Expert podcast, the 44-year-old actress discussed filming Brokeback Mountain — where she and Heath met for the first time. Bringing up the movie, host Dax Shepard immediately detoured into talking about the fallen Dark Knight star and his addiction — because it was really close to home for him. He said:
“I feel obligated to say that I knew him a little bit when he was getting sober. I can feel the weight of the world on him in a very special way that kind of broke my heart. I was very, very sad, and I thought he was just so special.”
Michelle agreed, adding a comment about being happy he left a piece of himself behind, in their daughter Matilda Ledger:
“So special, so special. Thank god there’s Matilda.”

Dax described the late actor as “this heart here that’s just leaking out of everywhere” and she said:
“Yeah, an incredible sensitivity.”
Looking back, though, the Dawson’s Creek alum remembers her past relationship being pure chaos:
“We had a baby, but I suppose maybe it’s a good thing about being young is that you don’t have so much life experience that you can contextualize things. So, you’re really just going with the flow.”
These days, Michelle is married to a guy named Thomas Kail, and they share children of their own: 4-year-old Hart, as well as a baby born in 2022, and a recent newborn. It’s an even more private life than she had with Heath.
