Question

What are the common mistakes novice runners make when going into marathon training? I’ve always wanted to run one, but I’m worried that I’ll be taking on more than I can handle. Any good training suggestions?

Mike D

Marathons are no joke! The first biggest mistake novice runners make is they don├óΓé¼Γäót get fit for proper running shoes or orthotics. You├óΓé¼Γäóre going to be running ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ A LOT – and the impact on your feet is going to affect your ankles, knees, hips, low back, and all the muscles supporting and surrounding those joints. So getting fit for a good running shoe will help alleviate some of the strain. The second biggest mistake is people just start to run, with no sense of direction of where to start or how fast and how far to run. The best thing to do is to join a running group/club; it will help immensely. If you want to train solo, start slow and give yourself plenty of time to train for those 26.2 miles. Check out marathonrookie.com, the site gives you everything you need to know on how to start training for a marathon; it even gives you a 16-week and 26-week training schedule breakdown. Good luck!

The urge to do a marathon hasn’t struck us quite yet… but if it does, we’ll definitely be taking this advice! It seems like those 26.2 miles are extremely hard on your body — so any way you can reduce that should be done!

Thanks, Mike!
