Watch out moms!
According to a study, it has been found that mothers have more of an effect on their children’s weight than fathers do.
The WomenTALK online survey revealed that 11% of respondents know that a child’s risk of becoming obese more than doubles if the mother is obese during her first trimester of pregnancy. That’s not a very large number.
Mothers have to realize that they’re the role modes for their children, especially making available the types of food the children should eat. Therefore, eating healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables does not only set a good example, but also puts children on a path of good health from the beginning.
The survey was conducted in order to assess women’s understanding about obesity and its impact on them and the health of their families. While most knew a lot of the risks that come along with obesity, only 28% recognize the important role played by friends and family members.
Research has shown that a person is more likely to become obese if they have a friend who is obese (57% increased risk) than if they have a sibling (40%) or spouse (37%) who is obese, according to HealthyWomen, an independent information source for women.
Since educating women about their health is very important, HeathyWomen has created an online resource center with health tips, exercise videos and nutritious family recipes.
