It was a “sad” and uncomfortable AF day at Today this week when NBC covered the latest updates in Nancy Guthrie‘s case!
As Perezcious readers know, Savannah was teary-eyed on TV this week after her colleagues shared new details about ransom notes received after her mom’s disappearance. The journalist didn’t offer commentary on the reporting, but begged for someone to speak up with answers about what happened to the 84-year-old. It was deeply emotional — but a moment TV execs were hoping wouldn’t happen!

First, a source told Page Six on Tuesday of the vibe on set:
“It was a sad day. … A lot of people at Today are affected by it. There was a sense of sadness today. Everybody just feels so bad for her. There is a lot of uncertainty.”
Another source told Rob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack on Thursday that once news of the ransom note details emerged, network execs urged Savannah to take as much time off as she needed. But she took none! They detailed:
“NBC practically begged her to take a break. Nobody expected her back. Everyone assumed she would step away — and honestly, no one would have blamed her.”
This comes after months of the entire cast and crew shielding Savannah from having to address the nightmare constantly, an insider added:
“Everyone was in protection mode. The goal was simple: let Savannah do her job without forcing her to relive the worst experience of her life in front of millions of people.”
But when new developments needed to be discussed, Savannah decided she wanted to be there in person, a source shared:
“She said, ‘If this is going to be discussed, I’m going to be the one discussing it.’ She wasn’t going to let anyone else tell her family’s story.”
Another insider expressed:
“What she’s carrying right now is unimaginable. Most people would be curled up at home. Savannah walked into a live television studio and did her job. That’s extraordinary.”
It really is! A confidant praised Savannah’s strength:
“People weren’t just heartbroken — they were in awe. What viewers saw was strength. What we saw was courage.”
It takes so much to not only return to work but show up and talk about one of the worst things her family’s ever been through. At the end of the day, we hope she’s doing what’s best for her and her mental health!
