Meredith Gaudreau has a heartbreaking announcement in the wake of her husband’s death.
As we’ve been following, pro hockey players Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who both played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, were tragically killed while riding bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey last month. The news was made all the more tragic when we learned Matthew’s wife Katie is currently pregnant with their first child. Awful.
Well, it gets worse. Johnny left behind a grieving widow and two children — but it’s about to be three. Because Meredith is also pregnant!
During Johnny’s memorial service on Monday, his wife made the shocking announcement. According to ABC News, she said as part of her speech to gathered family and friends:
“John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life. There’s specifically one week that I will cherish forever — it will be my favorite week of my life out of those six months. We’re actually a family of five. I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby.”
Oh no… How tragic that that child will never know their father.

Meredith called the pregnancy a “total surprise” — but clearly a joyous one at the time:
“John was beaming and so excited. His reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me.”
So sweet.
Johnny and Meredith also share daughter Noa, who turns 2 later this month, and son Johnny, 7 months. She added:
“Noa, our oldest, hasn’t even turned 2 yet. In less than three years of marriage, we’ve created a family of five. It doesn’t even sound possible, but I look at it as the ultimate blessing. How lucky am I to be the mother of John’s three babies? Our last one being a blessing and so special despite these difficult circumstances.”
The soon-to-be mom of three left off:
“To my babies, daddy loves you all so much and you have the best daddy in the world.”
Such a devastating situation. Not one pregnant widow left behind but two. And all on the day before the Gaudreau bros’ sister was about to get married.
At least Katie and Meredith, both soon to give birth to children who will never get to meet their fathers, can lean on each other to get through this all. We’re sending so much love their way.
