Niall Horan is paying tribute to Liam Payne.
On Friday, the One Direction star took to Instagram to mourn his friend, who died on Wednesday after jumping from his fourth-story hotel room. It is unclear if the fall was intentional, and the death is still under investigation.
Hours after the band released a joint statement on the ‘gram, the Heaven singer penned his own heartbreaking reflection on the loss of the 31-year-old — who he was lucky enough to see in person just days before his death. Liam and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy attended the Irish singer’s concert in Argentina back on October 2.

Alongside a throwback photo of the pair, Niall wrote:
“I’m absolutely devastated about the passing of my amazing friend Liam. It just doesn’t feel real.”
So true for so many. It’s just been so sudden. The Slow Hands star went on to express:
“Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure. All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness. We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever.”
Addressing their final moments together just weeks ago, Niall opened up:
“I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently. I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s heartbreaking. My love and condolences go out to Geoff, Karen, Ruth, Nicola and of course his son Bear. Thank you for everything, Payno. Love you brother.”
Oof.
You just never know when the last time you’ll see someone is going to be. How bittersweet it must be for him to think about that final get-together.
As mentioned, Liam had only just recently attended Niall’s concert. In a Snapchat video the day before, he told fans:
“I think we might just go and say hello. It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We’ve got a lot to talk about. And I would like to square up a couple of things with the boy. No bad vibes or anything like that.”
On the day of the show, he added in another video:
“We’re on our way to the show. Good luck, Mr. Horan. Have a beautiful time out there. We’re very proud of you. I can’t wait to sing along to some old 1D songs with you.”
He said he was “feeling great” and later said it was “a lovely show.” In a selfie, the boys could be seen smiling for the camera as Liam held onto Niall’s silver chain necklace. He captioned the pic, “Reunited.” In a second pic, they simply smiled. Take a look:
No one could’ve imagined what would happen just days later. So, so sad.
We’re sending love to all the 1D members right now — and to Liam’s loved ones, too, as they continue to mourn this loss.
