We have a really shocking update in the story of Liam Payne‘s death…
As we previously reported, the former One Direction member passed away on Wednesday after falling from the balcony of his room on the 3rd floor (what we’d call the 4th floor in the US) of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On Thursday, the Buenos Aires Security Ministry confirmed in a statement to the AP that Liam didn’t fall — instead, he “jumped from the balcony of his room.”
The preliminary autopsy report listed “internal and external” hemorrhages that caused his death. This sounds like a horribly painful way to go… but there may be some comforting news. He may not have felt any of it.
Later on Thursday, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina released a statement obtained by Page Six saying Liam was likely in a “state of semi or unconsciousness” when he hit the ground. How would they know? Local officials explained:
“The prosecutor’s office indicated that, due to the position in which the body was left and the injuries from the fall, it is presumed that Payne did not adopt a reflex posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen while in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.”
Even in cases of intentional jumps, those reflexes kick in. But they’re saying that didn’t happen. And the only way it wouldn’t have happened is if he was totally out of it.
The full toxicology report has not been completed, and will likely take some time. But it seems highly likely that he was under the influence. Eyewitnesses who interacted with him that day didn’t believe Liam was in his right mind. The hotel’s chief receptionist called 911 before the Strip That Down singer’s death, telling them about “a guest who is high on drugs and who is trashing the room.” In fact, he said:
“When he is conscious he is trashing the entire room and we need you to send someone, please.”
“When he is conscious” — meaning he was in and out of consciousness at that time as well. And authorities believe now that he was not awake in that last moment, during the fall.
It isn’t much, of course. But learning that he didn’t suffer in his last moment may be the only bit of solace we get in this story. We hope it offers some comfort to his fans and loved ones.
