Hallelujah! These baby steps just keep adding up!
Round about two hundred United Methodist clergy of the Church’s Northern Illinois Conference have stepped up their game with pledges to bless same-sex unions! Despite going against the Church’s policy and risking suspension, these Christian leaders are standing firm in setting an example for love and human rights!
This great news comes fast after a Wisconsin pastor was tried and found guilty of overseeing a lesbian union back in 2009. Rev. Amy DeLong, as pictured above, was punished with a twenty day suspension. DeLong says this sentence will not discourage her from continuing to officiate same-sex marriages.
With courageous leaders like herself, it’s no wonder the Northern Illinois clergy is following suit. The clergy voted on ending discrimination against LGBTQ individuals and announced their intention to send petitions on the matter to next year’s global gathering.
Rev. Gregory Gross, a deacon, comments:
Our civil society has taken the lead. Now the church is trying to catch up.
Heavens yeah! It’s about time we saw some sixties-ish activism within The Church.
