Now that twelve of the United States, as well as country’s capital District of Columbia, allow gay couples to marry, more happily face updates to their old-fashioned laws.
So during an episode of Super Soul Sunday, goddess Oprah Winfrey and panelists Rev. Ed Bacon, author Elizabeth Lesser, and author Mark Nepo chime in on the subject to ask if this is a social revolution or a cultural shift. And what effect will it have on traditional marriage?
According to Rev. Bacon, only one:
“It’s going to be enriched. I’ve never had a straight couple come to me and say, ‘My marriage is in trouble because of a gay couple living next door.'”
And as Elizabeth so eloquently put it, “the institution of marriage is already in trouble, long before gays were getting married.” Why yes, a few straight people here and there have kicked the value of marriage around time and time again with adultery and divorce. 😉
So Oprah replied:
“Maybe the gay people can help it!”
