People are praising Paul Ryan‘s speech at the Republican National Convention last night. We’ve got to admit, he’s pretty to look at and has no problem speaking clearly in front of millions.
The only problem is that another portion of the people watching noticed that his speech may have been built off of a few “seven or eight points…the fact checkers will have some opportunities to dispute.”
CNN‘s Wolf Blitzer was quick to point that out, although didn’t go in to specifics because “as far as Mitt Romney‘s campaign is concerned, Paul Ryan on this night delivered.”
Let’s talk about a few examples of some of the exaggerations and less-than-honest attacks that the Republican Vice Presidential candidate made against Barack Obama.
For starters, he blames the current president for the closing of a Janesville, Wisconsin GM plant. Numerous sources are contesting that claim because the plant had halted production in December of 2008, BEFORE Obama took office. While Ryan voted FOR an auto bailout under George W. Bush, he criticized Obama’s bailout which is credited for saving the majority GM and Chrysler plants all over the country.
Ryan also called out Obama for his 2009 stimulus plan by labeling it:
“…a case of political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism at their worst. You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal.”
While he swears he never asked for any of the $800 billion, letters to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis prove he actually asked that funds be given to two Wisconsin energy conservation companies. One of which went on to receive $20.3 million in federal funds.
Ryan also blasted the POTUS for creating “a bipartisan debt commission” that delivered “an urgent report” and then Obama “sent them on their way and did exactly nothing.” While fact checkers say this assertion is true, they point out that Ryan really has no room to talk since he was a member of the commission and voted against its final “urgent report.”
Regardless of who you want to vote for this November, it’s important to listen carefully to the words that both candidates saying and make sure those words are true. We look forward to hearing what Romney has to say tonight!
