Penelope Cruz is speaking out in defense of her longtime friend and “kind” soul, Johnny Depp.
The 45-year-old has officially filed a declaration in her Blow co-star’s defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, in which she speaks to Depp’s great character, generosity, and support during their time working together over the years. This legal move comes days after Winona Ryder also spoke out in support of the Sweeny Todd star, calling the abuse allegations against him “impossible to believe.”
According to documents obtained by The Blast, Cruz deeply admired the 56-year-old star from the very early stages of her career:
“I met Johnny when I was 19 years old. He was in Madrid and Pedro Almodovar introduced him to me. The only sentences I knew how to say in English at that time were, ‘how are you’ and ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp.’”
Of course, the two thespians did go on to appear in several films together including Murder on the Orient Express and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

She explained how Johnny was nothing short of amazing to her each time they worked as a tandem:
“Many years have passed and I have not only made 3 movies with him, but I also count on him as a great friend. I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humor.”
The Oscar-winning actress continued speaking to her friend’s character:
“I’ve seen Johnny in so many situations and he is always kind to everyone around. He is one of the most generous people I know.”
Cruz also revealed Depp was by her side during one of the most vulnerable and special moments of her life, while she was pregnant with her son, Leo Encinas Cruz.
“During six months of my first pregnancy, I spent every single day with him while we shot Pirates of the Caribbean. My husband and I will never forget the sweetness, protection, and kindness he treated me with during every single step of that process.”
She ended her emotional plea, adding:
“We love him very much and I feel lucky to have someone so special in our lives.”
Wow.
It’s obvious these two go way back and this undoubtedly sounds like a far cry from everything we’ve heard about him from Amber’s team thus far.
As we mentioned earlier, Penelope isn’t the only Hollywood actress to go on record for Depp during his defamation battle with the Aquaman starlet. We’ve heard also Winona Ryder say she “cannot wrap [her] head” around Heard’s accusations; meanwhile, Johnny’s ex-girlfriends Kate Moss, Sherilyn Fenn, and Vanessa Paradis have also come to his defense.
