Pink Recalls Nearly Dying From Drug Overdose Weeks Before Signing First Record Deal

Pink had a big wake-up call in the nick of time.

In a candid new interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, the pop star recalled suffering a drug overdose at a rave just weeks before signing her first record deal. It happened in November 1995 when she took “ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things” and “overdosed” at a Thanksgiving event. The 44-year-old reflected:

“Then I was out. Done. Too much.”

Wow.

When the host asked if she “almost died,” the songwriter confirmed such, adding that she was “off the rails” at the time and had previously “dropped out of high school.” A lot of this had to do with her complicated family life, she explained:

“I was a punk. I had a mouth. I had a chip on my shoulder. Basically, I grew up in a house where every day my parents were screaming at each other, throwing things. They hated each other. And then I got into drugs. I was selling drugs. And then I was kicked out of the house.”

Thankfully, she survived the scary incident and swore off hard drugs. Just weeks later, she, as the lead singer of an R&B band called Choice, “signed to LaFace Records” as “token white girls on a Black label.” The girl group didn’t last, but this was the push the So What vocalist needed to launch her solo career.

Back in 2012, Pink first opened up about her overdose in a chat with EW, in which she clarified that it “wasn’t to the point of going to the hospital.” Still… sounds like waaaay to close of a call!

Looking back at her tough childhood and all the challenges she’s overcome with 60 Minutes, the Just Like Fire artist’s glad she had the “metaphorical machete that [she’s] always carried that made [her] a really difficult kid” because it’s what makes her great at her job and a “survivor” in more ways than one. A great perspective!

Hear her discuss this difficult moment of her life (below).

So glad she survived the terrifying health scare! Reactions, Perezcious readers?
