Republicans Retreat From Same-Sex Marriage Fight!

Republicans Republican’t always have it their way! Especially if the Supreme Court has already ruled otherwise!

House leaders from the Republican party announced in a court filing today that it will not continue to try defending statutes that are similar to those in the recently struck down DOMA, which ban federal recognition of same-sex marriages.

Here’s an excerpt of what they wrote:

“The Supreme Court recently resolved the issue of DOMA Section 3├óΓé¼Γäós constitutionality. See United States v. Windsor, 570 U.S. __ (2013), 2013 WL 3196928 (U.S. June 26, 2013). The Windsor decision necessarily resolves the issue of DOMA Section 3├óΓé¼Γäós constitutionality in this case. While the question of whether 38 U.S.C. ├é┬º 101(3), (31) is constitutional remains open, the House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court├óΓé¼Γäós opinion in Windsor, that it no longer will defend that statute. Accordingly, the House now seeks leave to withdraw as a party defendant.”

What a relief, especially since some conservatives made it their mission (impossible) to reinstate the now-unconstitutional DOMA as soon as it was struck down by the highest court in the land, the Miami Heat’s court the Supreme Court!

AHmazing news! Just goes to show that you should never mess with the dudes and dudettes in the jedi outfits judge’s robes!
