This doesn’t really surprise us.
Ricky Gervais opened the Golden Globes on Sunday with some pretty heavy hitting jokes. But the crack that people probably remember the most is when he made fun of Caitlyn Jenner saying:
“I’m going to be nice tonight. I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously… now Caitlyn Jenner. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes… She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?”
The comedian also made a joke about Jeffrey Tambor, as he plays a trans woman on Transparent, hiding his genitalia under a dress.

Well apparently Gervais has received quite a bit of backlash as people took offense to his jokes, calling them transphobic.
Even Transparent creator Jill Soloway responded to Ricky’s jokes, telling Buzzfeed:
“I know his thing is to make fun of everything, but I think if more people understood the violence trans people face every day, it would be harder to make jokes about it.”
Well the Globes host is standing by his jokes as he took to Twitter to defend himself in a series of tweets stating:
Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist.

Do people not realise that when they say they are offended by a joke it makes that joke even funnier for the rest of us.

If jokes caused the easily offended to bleed internally, I’d do more stand up. pic.twitter.com/ScuOKExtwv

What if it was about her killing someone with her car? Would that be ok? https://t.co/IvAttciK7x

But it WAS Bruce Jenner who changed. Into Caitlyn Jenner. And I respect that. Just not her driving. https://t.co/suU77u61o8

I made a joke about Caitlyn Jenner killing someone in her car. I’m #TransportPhobic.

Outrage is the comedian’s alchemy.
