Rio De Janeiro has been selected to host the summer Olympic games in 2016.
This will be the first time the Olympics take place in South America. During the presentations to the International Olympics Committee, that was Brazil’s big selling point and it makes sense.
The Olympics are for the whole world and that includes South America. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in the presentation:
“The opportunity now is to expand the games to new continents. Light the cauldron in a tropical country, in the most beautiful of cities. Send a powerful message to the world that the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents, and to all humanity.”
