Long before Harvey Milk, Allan Spear was one of the first openly gay politicians in America.
The former Minnesota state senator died Saturday following complications from heart surgery on Thursday.
He was 71 years old.
Spear announced he was gay in 1974. He began working that decade to amend Minnesota’s Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. The legislation passed in 1993.
