When Jason Collins came out as the first gay athlete in US men’s team sports, we knew it wouldn├óΓé¼Γäót be long until others followed his courageous lead.
We were right!
During the LA Galaxy soccer game on Sunday, Robbie Rogers returned to the field, making him the first active male athlete in US professional team sports to be openly gay!!!
Rogers walked away from the game he loves in February and this was his first return as an openly gay man.
How brave!
Collins is still a free agent and looking for a team, which is why Rogers has made history as the first active player.
Like the true professional he is, after the match, Rogers said:
“I guess this is a historic thing, but for me it was just a soccer game.├óΓé¼┬¥
As usual, teammate Landon Donovan was extremely supportive, saying:
“Because of the nature of the way sports has been for so many years ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ the macho culture that’s been embraced by everybody ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ it’s of interest to everybody. Now, hopefully, the hype about it is over and he can get back to being a soccer player, which is what he wants to do.”
We’re thrilled that the tides are turning in US sports and that people are feeling confident enough to be who they really are!!!
