No bene!
An angry Roberto Cavalli is on the attack after discovering Giorgio Armani moved his Milan Fashion Week show one day earlier, leaving him the only big name designer showing on September 24th, the final day of Milan Fashion Week.
Last year Italian designers caused a big stink over the Milan schedule when Conde Nast editors threatened to skip it entirely because the dates coincide with London Fashion Week and the beginning of Paris Fashion Week.
Now Cavalli is worried his show will be skipped anyway since editors and press will be in a mad dash to get to Paris, and he’s blaming it all on the Italian Fashion Chamber for playing favorites with other designers like King Giorgio and Dolce & Gabbana.
In a scathing blog entry titled, The uselessness of the Camera Nazionale della Moda, Roberto wrote:
“Camera Nazionale della Moda limits itself to scheduling fashion shows, twice a year. The Cavalli maison has always been a member of the fashion chamber. I think that Armani is a member, too, but his every choice is perceived as an order! Dolce & Gabbana are not members but they don’t care about others and pursue their own interests as if they were the only fashion house in Italy. Other relevant Italian brands are owned by French companies and, as usual, Italians pull out the red carpet for foreigners. The Camera Nazionale della Moda supports only big names, giving small companies what’s left.”
As usual, the Camera Nazionale della Moda is washing its hands of the situation and it will not go against the wishes of ‘Little King’ Armani, and therefore the problems are mine alone. What can I do? Do I stay the final day, running the risk that some foreign journalists will forego my show, or should I overlap with smaller fry, smaller brands, acting as some of my colleagues do?”
After reading Cavalli’s blog, Camera della Moda president, Mario Boselli, fired back at the designer, saying:
“I dispute what Roberto Cavalli wrote on his blog. If he says that the Italian Fashion Chamber only schedules the shows, it means that he completely overlooks our numerous activities also on international scene, where we are well respected.”
Poor Roberto!
Hopefully too many editors won’t miss out on his show, but if they do there’s no doubt in our mind Cavalli will raise hell to get an earlier spot on the schedule next year.
