Roger Ebert CLARIFIES Insensitive Ryan Dunn Tweet

roger ebert clarifies ryan dunn tweet

We agree with what you’re saying, Roger, but do you have to use the word “jackass?”

After the news broke about Jackass star Ryan Dunn’s death on Monday, Roger Ebert tweeted the following in response to allegations that he was drinking before getting behind the wheel:

“Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.”

Ebert’s tweet didn’t sit well with lots of people, and he got quite a bit of heat for his comment, so he somewhat apologized for his insensitivity over his blog.

He also tweeted the following “clarification” of his original Ryan Dunn tweet:

“I should clarify: Anyone who drinks and drives is a jackass. That included me in my drinking days. Some are lucky enough to find sobriety.”

He ALSO tweeted a link to a 2009 column of his entitled “My Name Is Roger, and I’m an Alcoholic.”

We support Roger Ebert’s efforts against drinking and driving, but as we said before, we don’t think that anyone should be pointing fingers or poking fun at a truly tragic situation.

Instead of saying “anyone who drinks and drive is a jackass,” he’d save himself a lot of trouble by saying “nobody should drink and drive.”

What do U think? Are Roger Ebert’s apology efforts sufficient? Or is he digging himself into a deeper hole?
