Police Draw Guns On Suspected Burglar That Turned Out To Be... A Trapped Roomba?

Roomba not arrested

One potential home burglary went from alarming to hilarious when police discovered that the suspected home intruder was actually just a Roomba trapped in a bathroom.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon detailed the funny misunderstanding on its Facebook page on Tuesday. According to the post, the department received a 911 call from two men who reported a burglar was locked in a bathroom, claiming that they could see shadows under the bathroom door.
Police arrived at the scene fully prepared for a showdown: officers surrounded the house and even requested a K-9 officer for backup.
The situation only grew more tense when deputies entered the home and, according to the post, heard “rustling” noises coming from behind the bathroom door. Cops ordered the unseen suspect to open the door and show themselves, but they were ignored.

So, police had no choice but to enter the bathroom themselves. With guns drawn, authorities slowly opened the door to find… a rogue Roomba repeatedly running into the shower door.
The sheriff’s office said:

“With guns drawn, deputies open the door to encounter the suspect…an automated robot vacuum.”

Ha!
Per the post, Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Rogers cleared the call at about 2:13 p.m. local time, telling the department:

“As we entered the home we could hear ‘rustling’ in the bathroom. We made several announcements and the ‘rustling’ became more frequent. We breached the bathroom door and encountered a very thorough vacuuming job being done by a Roomba Robotic Vacuum cleaner.”

The Roomba was not arrested.
Washington Police kept a good sense of humor about the incident, as the department shared in its post:

LOLz!
Police Sgt. Danny DiPietro admitted that “immediate laughter” broke out in the station after the robotic suspect was discovered. He explained in an interview with The Washington Post:

“They didn’t know what was going to happen. They’re ready for anything and then it was like, ‘Whoa, what? What’s going on here? Am I getting pranked?”

While the threat may not have been real, the fear the two men felt was. Apparently, they were house sitting for their nephew and came back from walking the dog when they heard noises from the locked bathroom.

As Officer DiPietro explained, the duo’s concern to call police was valid, despite the fact that the burglar was just an enthusiastic vacuum. He added:

“These people were house sitting. They didn’t know this vacuum was going to kick on and go and do this. These people were in a unique circumstance.”

At least it’s something they can laugh about now! As for the Roomba…

It looks like this crook… got off clean.
