Like a few other celebrities before her, Rosie O’Donnell has said goodbye to the US!
In a video posted to TikTok on Tuesday, the talk show host offered a life update to fans revealing she moved to Ireland two months ago… and yes, it’s all because of Donald Trump. She fled America on January 15 — five days before the convicted felon and legally recognized sexual abuser was sworn into office. And she’s been loving her time across the pond! Rosie said in the clip:
“I’m here in Ireland. And it’s beautiful and warm — not physically. It’s actually quite cold. It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say. The people are so loving and so kind, so welcoming. And I’m very grateful.”

Now, the comedian is “in the process” of obtaining her Irish citizenship since her grandparents were born there. Her 12-year-old child Clay, who is non-binary, came along with her, but her four adult children — Parker, Chelsea, Blake, and Vivienne — did not make the move. Makes sense, they’re grown, they have their own lives. While there are many things Rosie will “miss,” like her other kids, she knew she needed to leave for her and her youngest child’s safety due to Trump and his administration’s policies:
“Although I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are. … You know, I’m happy. Clay is happy. I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country and when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”
But until then, she’s staying in Ireland! And can you blame her? Since being in office again, Trump has been targeting the LGBTQIA+ community (of which she and her child are a part), attacked other marginalized groups, and so much more. But in her case, specifically? Rosie has a long history of feuding with Trump, from her days back on The View. He HATES her — and as he becomes more and more like the authoritarian strongmen leaders he so admires, the more fearful his enemies should be. We mean… does anyone doubt he’ll want to eventually start jailing or otherwise punishing his loudest critics? Honestly, just listen to what he’s saying!
And we are only a few months into his administration… We still have four more years to go, unfortunately. (Hopefully only four…)
Rosie said it has been “heartbreaking” to see “what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well,” adding:
“The personal is political, as we all know.”
The Harriet The Spy star went on to encourage people to “stand up,” use their voices, and protest. She still believes in fighting for America. But at the same time, she also advised her followers to protect their peace as much as possible. She ended the video by saying:
“Peace, people, peace. Protect your sanity, is all I can say. Protect your sanity as much as you can, and try not to swim in the chaos if possible. But I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it. I think about everyone every day, the United States of America. I am hoping we can turn things around. Counting on you, all of you, to do what’s right. And I think deep down inside we all know what that is.”
