Rudy Giuliani Backing Down On Gay Marriage Promise

rudy backs down on promise

Where oh where has Rudy Giuliani gone?

Back in 2001 when the former mayor of New York City was going through a rough divorce, Howard Koeppel provided a crash pad for him.

Being thankful for Koeppel’s generous offer, Giuliania told the car dealer:

Howard, I don’t ever do anything that’s not legal. If it becomes legal in New York, you’ll be one of the first ones I would marry.

But now that gay marriage IS legal in New York, Rudy is nowhere to be found. Koeppel has made a number of calls to his old friend in hopes of getting him to officiate a marriage. No luck.

The Republican, as moderate as he is, has always opposed gay marriage in the political arena but endorsed civil unions. Record history aside, Rudy is known for his higher than average character. Why would he fall back on his word? Political consultant Scott Levenson has an idea:

[Presiding at the wedding] would be a sign he’s no longer interested in running [as a Republican] for president — ever.

Hmm, interesting.. We’re still miffed, though. Not cool, Rudolph! Friendship > Politics!
