Ryan Reynolds came through for his old alma mater!
The Canadian actor is going viral this weekend for his hilarious and well-meaning commencement speech to the class of 2020 at Kitsilano Secondary School in Vancouver. It was the very same school from which Reynolds himself graduated years before making it in the entertainment industry, and so he was able to bring a certain relatable attitude to the whole thing… and a few quick jokes, too!

Speaking virtually via remote video to the students — who were without a traditional graduation due to the coronavirus pandemic — Reynolds described the school as “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
He cracked jokes about former classmates of his who were now teachers at the school, and he even bought one large pizza for every single grad from the local pizza shop near the school he noted he badly misses. So fun!
But along with the funny and cute, he also brought some wisdom to the five-minute speech, saying (below):
“…I can pass on this little chestnut of wisdom. Practice some form of compassion everyday … Some of you may consider me successful. I don’t know, some of you may have seen Green Lantern. But I’ll tell you this, empathy has gotten me so much farther in not only in my life but in my career. [It is] a radical act of ambition that you could ever demonstrate. To my surprise [empathy] has made me money, friends, priceless memories. It’s allowed me to fully accept and provide love. It’s helped me recognize the mistakes i’ve made and learn from them. Above all it made me happy. It’s something I’ll probably be working on my whole life.”
Wow!
Talk about a pearl of wisdom alongside a series of wise cracks and d**k jokes! We’re loving it, especially with such a heartwarming and real message coming out during such a tough time for the world right now, what with COVID-19 and seemingly endless social distancing and all. Bravo to the Deadpool star on perfectly reading the room here!
