Selena Gomez is speaking out about all the controversy surrounding her latest movie.
What should have been a time of unabashed celebration for the pop star has quickly nose dived into controversy for several reasons. First there were complaints over Selena’s accent in the role, a controversy soon dwarfed by the discovery of co-star Karla Sofía Gascón’s resurfaced posts on X (Twitter). It hasn’t been pretty, and it’s basically tanked the Netflix hit’s Oscars chances.
As far as the tweets go, blatant examples of racism and xenophobia were uncovered in addition a diss aimed AT Selena! She allegedly called her a “rich rat” at the height of the Hailey and Justin Bieber drama! And while Karla has denied that one was her real tweet (it’s impossible to tell now as her page has been wiped), the negativity has surely all taken a toll on the Rare Beauty founder. Or in her words, stolen some of the “magic.”
During an interview at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, the 32-year-old was asked how she’s doing amid all the backlash over the film. And she gave a very tactful response without directly addressing Karla:
“I’m good. I’m really good. Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful.”
“I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done.” Y’all catch that? “What I’VE done.” She may as well have said, well I didn’t post racist crap. LOLz!
The Only Murders in the Building star added that she still believes in the movie’s good intentions:
“I live with no regrets and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
The unsaid part, of course, is that she couldn’t possibly have known how it would turn out because of her co-star’s cruel comments.
Hey, you live and you learn. At least the only thing people are criticizing her for is her Spanish!
What are your thoughts, Perezcious readers??
