Serena Williams has some SERIOUS explaining to do!
The tennis superstar has come under some heavy fire recently after an interview with Rolling Stone quoted her making some harsh comments about the Steubenville rape victim.
The interviewer wrote about watching a news report with Serena, when she said the following SHOCKING comments:
“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously, I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
LUCKY??! You cannot be serious, Serena!
Well, the criticism must’ve gotten back to her, because now she’s apologizing for her insensitive remarks. Sort of…
Serena released a statement on her website where she seems to be arguing that she never made the comments in the first place:
“What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ that of the rape victim and of the accused. I am currently reaching out to the girl├óΓé¼Γäós family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ what I supposedly said ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.”
We’re not quite sure if this statement qualifies as an apology, but the whole thing definitely leaves an icky taste in our mouths.
We really would hope that Serena would be smarter than to make such horribly offensive comments, especially since she considers herself an advocate for women’s equality.
