Shailene Woodley Reveals She Tried An Open Relationship: 'There Should Be No Rules'

Shailene Woodley was extremely open in her new New York Times interview this week.

And we mean open! HA!

In a discussion about her new movie Endings, Beginnings, Woodley examined the love triangle at the heart of the film. Asked about the potential for her character to simply date both men (played by super sexy stars Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan), the 28-year-old had a surprising answer: 

“Listen, I’m someone who has experienced both an open relationship and a deeply monogamous relationship in my life, and I think we’re in a day and age where there should be no rules except for the ones designed by two people in a partnership — or three people, whatever floats your boat!”

WOW!

That’s a pretty enlightened take on relationships! 

Before you start thinking that “no rules” means anything goes, Shai clarified that ANY relationship should have some appropriate boundaries. She continued: 

“But there has to be a level of responsibility in any relationship dynamic, and that responsibility is simply honesty and communication and trust. Apart from that, it’s really none of our business what people choose to do with their lives.”

Now that’s something we can get behind! 

The Divergent star has always kept her relationships fairly private, and she doesn’t give us any hint about with whom she shared an open relationship.

She did date ex Ben Volavola for “years” though, so who knows — maybe some of those years were non-monogamous?

Before that she was also rumored to be romantically involved with stars Ezra Miller and Theo James. But neither of those was ever officially confirmed.

Shailene’s Instagram may provide further clues to the mystery man. In recent months, she’s shared multiple memories with ex Nahko, and even promoted his new music. 

She also posted a snap of Alex Ebert of the band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros from a trip they took to Japan together… perhaps he could be the ex in question??? 

Then again, maybe it’s not a man at all — after all, the Big Little Liar is on record saying she “[falls] in love with human beings based on who they are, not based on what they do or what sex they are.”

She was rumored to have dated longtime friend Ellen Page for a bit back in 2014. Hmm…

Whatever the case may be for her past relationship, Woodley told the Times she’s “very much single” now and has been for “a while.” Buuuuuut… on an episode of Nahko’s IG Live show during quarantine, she hinted at another social-distance relationship.  

“I mean, the reason I was crying today is because I love love so much, and I just had a very kind of heartbreaking morning, and it was really difficult. But, within that difficulty this person and I were able to find a means for our own healing together, and sat with, and prayed virtually via the phone — because we couldn’t be in the same space together — for hours.”

It seems like Shailene is going to keep us guessing! Honestly, good for you girl!
