This is truly despicable!
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington D.C. is threatening to discontinue the social service programs it runs in the District if the city doesn’t change their proposed same-sex marriage law.
The Catholic Charities serves 68,000 people in the District with adoption, homelessness and healthcare! All of those people who need help would be affected by this irrational decision!
The same-sex marriage bill in question would NOT require religious organizations to perform or have their facilities used for same-sex weddings, but they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.
Apparently they’re upset that they could potentially have to provide employee benefits to same-sex married couples!
Are you fucking kidding us?
Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese says:
“If the city requires this, we can’t do it. The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that’s really a problem.”
Hatred and disrespect are the real problems, lady!
Luckily the bill seems to have unwavering support from key D.C. Council members as some have said the church is being “somewhat childish” and another saying that “they [the church] don’t represent, in my mind, an indispensable component of our social services infrastructure” and also the council “will not legislate based on threats.”
GREAT attitudes!
Discrimination is not right! If they don’t like the new law then it appears the District will sever their relationship with the Catholic Charities and they will no longer receive public funding.
As Peter Rosenstein of the Campaign for All D.C. Families said, “The issue here is they are using public funds, and to allow people to discriminate with public money is unacceptable.”
It IS unacceptable! Think of the people you would be hurting based on your selfishness and hatred. Councilwoman Mary Cheh sums it up well:
“Are they really going to harm people because they have a philosophical disagreement with us on one issue? I hope, in the silver light of day, when this passes, because it will pass, they will not really act on this threat.”
Hear, hear!
