Terrified Passengers Thought They Were 'Going To Die' When High-Rise Elevator Plummeted 84 FLOORS!

Yet another reason to take the stairs…
Six people are lucky to be alive after the the elevator they well riding in suddenly dropped 84 floors on Friday in one of the tallest buildings of Chicago.
Apparently a broken hoist rope caused the express elevator in the former John Hancock Center to fall all the way from the 95th floor to the 11th — finally coming to a stop in a “blind shaft” that left no openings for rescuers to get to the passengers.

Passenger Jaime Montemayor, who was visiting Chicago from Mexico City with his wife, told WBBM he “believed we were going to die” when the elevator first dropped, recalling:

“We were going down and then I felt that we were falling down and then I heard a noise — ‘clack clack clack.’ “

Another unnamed passenger told the Chicago Tribune that everyone “started freaking out” when the elevator suddenly began dropping faster than normal, explaining that the experience “was really bumpy — it felt like a flight into Chicago.”
Thankfully, the elevator stopped, and no one was injured. But the group was still trapped inside for about three hours before they were rescued.
Struggling to even find the group, firefighters initially drilled a hole in the concrete wall and used a camera to determine where in the shaft the elevator stopped. Once they were located, officials had to breach a wall to get to the stranded passengers.
The group of six were freed just before 3 a.m. local time, and reportedly cheered and applauded as rescuers led them to safe grounds.
Thank goodness everyone is safe! Tower of Terror may fun at Disney, but in real life it’s the scariest place on earth!
